                       Fourth International Workshop on
Ant Colony Optimization and Swarm Intelligence

                    Brussels, Belgium, September 5-8, 2004

CALL FOR PAPERS (prepared on Oct 13, 2003)

Up-to-date information at http://iridia.ulb.ac.be/~ants/ants2004/

SCOPE OF THE WORKSHOP

Swarm intelligence is a relatively novel discipline interested in the study of
self-organizing processes in Nature and human artifacts.

Researchers in ethology and animal behavior have proposed many models to
explain interesting aspects of social insect behavior such as self-organization
and shape-formation. Recently, algorithms inspired by these models have been
proposed to solve difficult computational problems.

An example of particularly successful research direction in swarm intelligence
is "ant colony optimization", which focuses on discrete optimization problems.
Ant colony optimization has been applied successfully to a large number of
difficult discrete optimization problems including the traveling salesman, the
quadratic assignment, scheduling, vehicle routing, etc., as well as to routing
in telecommunication networks.

Another example of interesting research direction is swarm robotics, where the
focus is on applying swarm intelligence techniques to the control of large
groups of cooperating autonomous robots.

The ANTS 2004 workshop will give researchers in both real and artificial swarm
intelligence the opportunity to meet, to present their latest research, and to
discuss current developments and applications.

The four-day workshop will be held in Brussels, Belgium, Sep 5-8, 2004.
September 5 will be devoted to tutorials.

RELEVANT RESEARCH AREAS

ANTS 2004 solicits contributions dealing with any aspect of ant colony
optimization and swarm intelligence. Typical, but not exclusive topics of
interest are:

- Models of the behavior of social insects or other animal societies that can
  stimulate new algorithmic approaches.

- Empirical and theoretical research in ant colony optimization and swarm
  intelligence.

- Application of ant colony optimization and swarm intelligence methods to
  real-world problems.

- Swarm robotics.

PUBLICATION DETAILS

Conference proceedings will be published by a major publisher and distributed
to the participants at the conference site. More on this subject will be
published soon on the web site.

BEST PAPER AWARD

A best paper award will be presented at the workshop.

At the Technical Faculty of the University of Bielefeld, Germany, the
AG Genome Informatics is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Fellow
(Scientific Assistant, C1) starting January 1st, 2004.

The area of research is the development of tools, methods, and
algorithms for data analysis of new technologies in Genomics and
Proteomics. In particular, problems in mathematics and computer
science that arise in the context of data analysis of mass
spectrometry data (Genomics and Proteomics), will be of interest. Of
particular concern are statistical and stochastical methods for
analyzing mass spectrometry data. The main research is not only to
work out basic principles of such analysis in theory, but also to
implement and apply such methods to real-world data.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or comparable research experience in
Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or Mathematics. Strong mathematical,
statistical, and computational skills are required.

The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to participate in teaching.

For further information on the AG Genome Informatics, see
http://www.cebitec.uni-bielefeld.de/groups/ims/

The University of Bielefeld is aiming to increase the percentage of
female faculty members. Thus qualified women are especially encouraged
to apply. Disabled candidates will be given preference in the case of
equal qualifications.

Please send applications (CV, list of publications, copies of diplomas
and grades, and statement of research interests) ASAP, but latest
November 15th, 2003, to:

The Mathematical Sciences Department of the IBM Thomas J. Watson
Research Center invites applications for its 2004-2005 Herman Goldstine
Postdoctoral Fellowship for research in mathematical and computer
sciences. The fellowship provides scientists of outstanding ability an
opportunity to advance their scholarship as resident department members
at the Research Center. The Research Center is located in Westchester
County, less than an hour north of New York City.

The Mathematical Sciences Department provides an atmosphere in which
basic research is combined with work on technical problems arising in
industry. Currently, about 100 permanent members, academic visitors,
and post-doctoral fellows are pursuing research in pure and applied
mathematics and in theoretical and exploratory computer science. Areas
of research include: Algorithms (approximation, randomized, and on-line);
Coding theory; Cryptography; Data mining (machine learning, pattern
recognition, and computational statistics); Dynamical systems and
differential equations; Economics (auctions, decision theory, game theory,
and experimental economics); High-performance computation (including
scientific computing and parallel computing); Numerical analysis;
Optimization (discrete, continuous, and stochastic); Probability theory
(computational finance, queuing, stochastic models,  and risk management);
Statistics (time-series, multivariate analysis, design, and reliability);
Supply-chain and operations management (optimization and performance
modeling).

Close interaction with permanent department members is expected, but
fellows are free to pursue their own research interests.

One fellowship will be awarded. Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree
after September 1999 or should expect to receive one before the
fellowship commences in the second half of 2004. The stipend is expected
to be between \$87,000 and \$107,000, depending on the area and length
of experience.

Applications will be accepted between September 1, 2003 and December 20,
2003. For complete and updated details, including the application
procedure, please visit the following web-site:

IBM is committed to work-place diversity, and is proud to be an
equal-opportunity employer.
